An article was published in the Local Guardian on 30th May 2017 titled “Masjid-e-Umer in Queens Road, Walthamstow, apologises to neighbours awoken by worshippers shouting and slamming doors” – This is a response from Masjid-e-Umer to that article.
We were very disappointed by the sensationalist article about our Mosque in the local Guardian. One of our neighbours posted a comment on social media which resulted in the Local Guardian publishing this provocative article. This article is divisive by design and is deliberate in its attempt to cause discord within our diverse community. Our Mosque, Masjid-e-Umer, is an integral part of the local community and has been positively serving the local community since 1977. We value the excellent relationships we have with our friends and neighbours.
Prior to this inflammatory article being published the mosque had taken steps to address the issues raised. We were informed of the comment on social media and of our neighbours concerns to which we responded swiftly. Guidance was provided to the Mosque attendees to be considerate of others when leaving the Mosque and keeping noise levels to a minimum. At no point was Masjid-e-Umer forced to apologise, as stated in the Local Guardian article. We felt it our duty to respond to the concerns raised by our neighbour by immediately addressing the matter.
The Local Guardian are in a position of responsibility to the community they serve. By sowing discord within the diverse community of Waltham Forest they have failed in their duty as a local publication for ALL that live here. We appeal to the Local Guardian that they must endeavour to report only information that is factual; not to create tensions within the peaceful community in which we live. Local publications should be promoting community cohesion, not dividing and causing disruption.
Our Mosque, congregation, friends and neighbours from all backgrounds have contributed to helping others. Some of the examples of the good work in which we have participated, include helping to raise funds for bowel cancer treatment for Whipps Cross Hospital. In February we held a cancer awareness workshop for women and we regularly organise food collection for the needy, locally and internationally.
We also host an annual open day at our Mosque where all are welcome to visit.
We would like to reinforce the duty that we, as Muslims, have to our neighbours through the words of our dear beloved Prophet (peace be upon him):
Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “He will not enter Paradise whose neighbour is not secure from his wrongful conduct.” (Muslim)
Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “Jibraeel kept enjoining good treatment of neighbours until I thought he would make neighbours beneficiaries”. (Ibn Majah)
We would like to thank our friends and neighbours for their tremendous kindness and support, especially since the publication of this article.
Walaikum Salam (May peace be with you)
Assalamualaikum All
We have received a compliant about people making too much noise when leaving the mosque after taraweeh prayers by shouting, driving fast down residential roads and making noise by talking loudly.
Whether you are from Walthamstow or come from out of the area to pray........ Please DO NOT IGNORE the above complaint/plea.
We have to rectify this situation and practically show the real teachings of our beloved RELIGION as regards to neighbours.
Allah almighty has mentioned in the Holy Qur'aan:
Worship Allah and join none with Him in worship, and do good to parents, kinsfolk, orphans, Al-Masakin (the poor), the NEIGHBOUR who is near of kin, the NEIGHBOUR who is a STRANGER, the companion by your side, the wayfarer (you meet), and those (slaves) whom your right hands possess. Verily, Allah does not like such as are proud and boastful”
[an-Nisa’ 4:36].
Through numerous sayings of the Prophet Muhammad (s) we understand the rights of our neighbours:
Abu Hurayrah RA narrates that the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him NOT ANNOY HIS NEIGHBOUR.”
Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “Jibra' eel kept urging me that neighbours should be treated well until I thought he would make them heirs. Bukhari/ Muslim
Ramadhan is a month of MERCY and compassion; let us NOT make this month a month of suffering and punishment for our neighbours.
As from tonight we need to make sure we leave quietly from the Masjid and we do not stop to talk, rather go straight home. Be very careful with opening/closing car doors.
And let us organise a letter addressed to our neighbours that we are sorry for the past but we WILL be careful in the future insha'Allah.
May Allah almighty grant us Towfeeq of Amal
Please pass this message on.
Wassalam
